Fellowship & Support:

  • Subgroups

  • Field trips
  • Moms’ Night Out
  • Prayer & Praise Ministry

  • Service Opportunities:

    Card Making for Soldiers
C.H.E.A. students and parents get together to make cards for soldiers who are serving overseas.

    Christmas Caroling
Each year, at Christmas, our families have the opportunity to sing at nursing homes and fellowship with the residents.

    Interfaith
We provide dinner on the first Saturday of every month to Interfaith, a ministry that provides emergency services such as food, shelter, clothes, and medicine to men, women and families. Two or more families each month join together to provide dinner for the residents of Interfaith. This is an easy, fun, and safe way to reach out to people who are very grateful to have a hot meal.

    Mathathon
This is both a service event and an academic event. Students do math problems in order to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. They ask friends and family to sponsor each problem that is correct.

    Park Beautification
C.H.E.A. has adopted a park as a community service project. We help maintain the beauty of this natural park setting next to the Discovery Science Center off Lake Weir Ave. This is usually accomplished in conjunction with our jogging club days.

    Physical Fitness:

    Bowling Club
Bowling is a once-a-month club that is non-competitive. Children are assigned lanes according to their age with parents monitoring and helping at each lane.

    Field Day
A C.H.E.A. wide activity that is both athletic and challenging. It is reminiscent of the field day the parents may remember from their school days with obstacle courses, sack races, and silly games.

    Jogging Club
Open to PreK and up, this club meets twice per month at Brick City Park. Children are encouraged to walk, or jog, at their own pace. Ribbons are awarded for each new level obtained.

    Presidential Physical Fitness
For ages 6-17, this event uses the Presidential Physical Fitness National Standards to measure children’s efforts in five areas: shuttle run, mile run, sit-ups, chin-ups, and V-sit reach. Students are given awards when they achieve predetermined standards.

    Academic Activities:

    Anthology
A collection of writings and illustrations created by the children of C.H.E.A. from K-12th grade. Children may submit a drawing, poem, short story, illustrated riddle or other example of their work. These are compiled, printed, bound and distributed to those members who have submitted work. Participating families will receive one anthology free and may purchase additional books for a nominal fee.

    Book Bowl
This activity encourages reading and comprehension in a fun and exciting way. Reading lists for each grade level are available. Children participate on teams in a game show style contest. The books may be read to your child or they may read them independently. Children are not required to read all the books in order to participate however, it is highly recommended. Participants who read all the books on their list receive a special award during the event.

    Book-It
Pizza Hut’s reading incentive program is available for grades K5-6th grade. Must be 5 years old by Sept. 1 to participate. Parents set goals and track the number of books read by children enrolled in the program and receive monthly certificates for a free personal pan pizza. (October – March) Starting with the 2008/20009 school year, Book-It requires parents of home school children to register themselves at their website.

    Co-op
This is a school type setting where families who are interested in supplemental group classes get together once per week for approximately twelve weeks. Some classes are taught by parents and others, like art and music, are taught by hired professionals. There is usually a reasonable fee involved and parents are expected to help out in some way.

    Garden Club
The garden club meets once a month to learn about and practice all facets of gardening. Some meetings are field trips.

    History Fair
Participants choose an historical/biographical subject and give a brief 1-3 minute oral presentation of the topic. Children can dress in costume, make a model, recite an historical poem, make a mask if applicable, etc. Creativity is encouraged! This is also an excellent opportunity for your children to experience public speaking in a friendly atmosphere and to work on research techniques for a favorite topic.

    International Fair
This fun, family activity is for children K5-12th grade. There is no judging. Each child or family must pick a country – no duplicating countries. Your children can research the customs, dress, games, food, history, geography, etc. of that country. Children can dress according to their country, make a dish from that region, draw pictures, cut out pictures, add text, etc. A project board is often used. An oral 1-2 minute presentation is performed by the child(ren). Parents may assist younger children in the oral presentation if needed.

    Mathathon
This is both a service event and an academic event. Students complete math problems in order to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. They ask friends and family to sponsor them for each problem that is correct.

    Performance/Fine Arts and Lego Challenge
These events are held at the same location/time. For the Lego challenge, children may build a free form display made from Legos (not a kit) to display. For the performance portion of the event, children may perform a talent such as playing an instrument, singing, dancing, etc. For the art portion, original artwork such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, mosaics, etc. may be displayed.

    Yearbook
Our yearbook includes student pictures as well as photographs from C.H.E.A. sponsored activities. Each subgroup submits photos from their own activities like field trips and service projects. Children 8th grade and up are welcome on the yearbook staff.

    Science Fair
Children grades K and up use the Scientific Method, documented on a display board, to work through a project. Formal projects usually take from 8 to 12 weeks to finish. (If you have a student in grade 6 or over, your project will need to include an Abstract. The winner of this age group is able to move on to Regional competition if they so choose.) Children are required to present their display and results, plus be able to answer the judge's questions on the date of the Fair. We may allow both competitive and non-competitive projects – this changes from year to year, depending on student interest.

    Administrative Services and Resources:

    Awards Program and Kindergarten Graduation
Our year-end program is a special time to acknowledge our children’s accomplishments. Generally, our program includes a slide presentation of the past year and certificates for the children for their accomplishments. A traditional kindergarten graduation is also held at this time – usually right before the awards program.

    Box Tops
Members of C.H.E.A., along with friends and family, collect Box Tops for Education from products purchased at the grocery store. These are turned into cash which is used by C.H.E.A. for the benefit of our Prayer and Care Ministry.

    Bulk Email
Occasionally, the C.H.E.A. Board of Directors will bulk email information to the entire membership. However, most information is found on the C.H.E.A. website.

    Large Group Meetings
C.H.E.A. has two mandatory meetings per year, usually in August and February. These meetings should be attended by at least one parent, however, if applicable, both parents are encouraged to attend

    School Pictures
A professional photographer offers individual student and subgroup “class” pictures to C.H.E.A. children. Since these photos are used for the C.H.E.A. yearbook, we encourage members to participate even if you do not wish to purchase pictures or a yearbook.

    Testing and Evaluations
For a fee, group achievement testing is available for C.H.E.A. members. We also provide information about individual student portfolio evaluations.

    Used Curriculum Book Sale
Usually held at the end of the school year (May), this sale is open to both C.H.E.A. members and the public. You may sell your own curriculum and/or purchase used curriculum at this annual sale. C.H.E.A. charges a small percentage to sellers. Before December 31, you may also list your used curriculum on the C.H.E.A. website classified section.

    Website
The C.H.E.A. website is our main source of communication with all of the members of C.H.E.A. The members’ area includes a calendar of all events, our bylaws, a prayer area, classified area, bulletin board, list of member contact information, etc. This is a critical tool for keeping current with all that is happening in C.H.E.A.
